Faith Kipyegon has donated the spikes she wore and made history with during the World Championships in Budapest to the Museum of World Athletics (MOWA).

In the competition held in Hungary in August, Kipyegon won gold in both 1500m and 5000m while wearing the pink spikes.

As she was dominant in the Diamond League series preceding the Budapest Championship, Kipyegon carried her top form and conquered the 1500m in style. She was in control of the proceedings from the first step to the last as she set an unassailable gap with 200m remaining.

In the homestretch, Kipyegon crossed the line in 3:54.87, clear of Ethiopia's Diribe Weltej, who took second in 3:55.69.

Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands claimed bronze in 3:56.00, easing the disappointment of having fallen within sight of a possible victory in the 10,000m on the opening night – a remarkable feat by a woman who had overcome a mid-race cramp to make a winning marathon debut in London just four months previously, clocking 2:18:33.

Kipyegon claimed gold in the 5000m as she became the shinning star in the August Championship.

Focus on 2024 Olympics

After a stunning season in 2023, Kipyegon's main focus should be on the Olympic Games that will be held in Paris in August.

She is already one of only three athletes who have retained an Olympic 1500m title, having followed in the footsteps of Sebastian Coe, who won the men’s crown in 1980 and 1984, and Tatyana Kazankina, who was the women’s champion in 1976 and 1980.

The Paris Games will offer her a chance to become the first to win three Olympic 1500m gold medals, which would elevate her standing in the middle-distance pantheon to hallowed higher ground.

“That’s the big fish. If I win three back-to-back Olympic titles at 1500m, it will be motivation for the next generation. And it will be a big motivation for me to try to achieve it.

“It would be a big legacy to leave behind. It would be something else," Kipyegon told World Athletics regarding the next Olympic Games.
