Fingers are crossed amongst contestants ahead of the 2020/21 Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League Awards Gala at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi tonight.

The eagerly-awaited event rewards deserving players and technical bench officials who thrived during the season which was held under unprecedented conditions occasioned by the Covid-19 pandemic that saw the season halted twice before resumption.

There are a total of 12 categories to be rewarded of which the top is the Most Valuable Player (MVP).

The other main categories to be awarded in the event are the Team Fair Play Award, Coach of The Year, Young Player of the Year, Golden Glove (Best Goalkeeper), Defender of The Year, The Best Midfielder, the Golden Boot Winner (top scorer) and Team of the Year.

Also to be feted are Best Referee, The Assistant Referee of the Year and the President’s Award.

Anxiety reigns supreme amongst nomineesbut what remains certain is that the issue touching on marksmanship has already been sealed.

Kariobangi Sharks scoring machine Eric Kapaito is guaranteed the Golden Boot Award after pumping in 24 goals thus setting a new record in recent years.

The next in the pecking order is AFC Leopards’ Elvis Rupia who had 17 goals to help Ingwe wind up in the fourth position.

Eugene Asike.

Likewise, influential Sofapaka captain Lawrence Juma may be a goal adrift in the third position with 16 strikes but book-makers expect him to impress judges considering that he is a natural midfielder.

A shrewd signing from Gor Mahia, Juma was given a free role at Batoto Ba Mungu and his other advantage in pursuit of the Best Midfielder Award is making several assists for the team which wound up in the 12th position in the season.

Another red-hot contestant for the award is former Tusker striker Henry Meja who has since joined Swedish top tier league side AIK.

Known for his mien of bullying defence lines almost at will, Meja scored 10 goals and made several assists for Tusker and has been an outstanding player of the team ever since he was signed from Western Kenya provincial league side, Arsenal Lirhembe.

Another Tusker player who could be considered is defender Eugene Asike who stood tall in the team’s defence that conceded only 26 goals in the season.
