Account for each shilling or resign, leaders tell FKF boss Mwendwa
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has come out under a scathing attack from three stakeholders for allegedly blackmailing and verbally attacking the government on matters finances.
Former federation boss Sam Nyamweya accompanied by ex-Vihiga Governor Moses Akaranga and former AFC Leopards chairman Alex Ole Magelo, took a swipe at the current president Nick Mwendwa over what they said is unwarranted attack on Sports Permanent Secretary Kirimi Kaberia over alleged failure to issue subsidies towards national teams even when their federation has allegedly failed to account for millions of shillings previously given by the government.
In a joint statement, the three chided the federation and faulted the decision to disband national women’s team Harambee Starlets camp under the pretext that it had no funds and even went ahead to shift blame to the government.
The team players were, however, later instructed to report to camp after the intervention of Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed.
FKF was put to task to explain the expenditure of a hefty sum channelled to its coffers by the government, world body Fifa and Africa governing body, Confederation of African Football (CAF) towards Harambee Stars preparations for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
FKF, according to their own financial report for 2018 received Sh591, 282, 609, inclusive of Sh195, 223, 550 given by the government through the Ministry of Sports.
“The same federation received a further Sh244 million in 2019 from the government for AFCON with a further Sh85 million being given by the government,” said the officials.
The aggrieved stakeholders acknowledged the Sports Registrar’s stance that the election be put on hold until pertinent issues are sorted out.
Honest enough
“We salute the stand by the Registrar but let it be known to Kenyans that among the issues touching on finances, FKF was given Sh 244 million by the government towards Harambee Stars full participation in AFCON yet the team was eliminated in the preliminary stage. Where is the balance?” posed Nyamweya.
Nyamweya said if the federation was honest enough to allude that there was indeed a balance in the kitty, it should ordinarily be used to fund Starlets, a team he claimed he formed during his tenure at FKF.
