Athletics coaches in Kenya have been urged to include field events in their training curriculum.

Sea Level Athletics Training Camp coach Hillary Cheruiyot called on his fellow tacticians to not only concentrate on track events but to also train athletes on other disciplines.

Speaking in Kericho town yesterday, Cheruiyot said that there was a need for coaches to embrace other sports disciplines and encourage athletes, especially the budding ones, to experiment with different events.

The camp is on the outskirts of Kericho town, Kericho County.

The youthful tactician added that besides creating more opportunities for athletes, the field events will ensure the country bags more medals in major athletics events across the globe.

“We should not rely on track events only for medals but we should include field events to boost our medal tally.”

Cheruiyot also called on fellow tacticians to move with speed and ensure they start training post Covid-19.

He said Kenya faces threats on the track from some countries like Ethiopia and Uganda, calling for the need to broaden athletics activities to include various disciplines.

He said there was a need to embrace events such as javelin, discuss, hammer throwing, shot put, high jump and triple jump.

The tactician revealed that he intends to pool resources aimed at scouting budding athletes who will be encouraged to embrace field events in his camp.

“I am planning to include field events as part of training in our camp very soon.

The way things are in the world of athletics, I suggest, this is the way to go,” the tactician said.
