New Tusker FC signing Eric Mmata hopes to emerge as a top scorer in the upcoming premier league season scheduled for the 24th of September and in doing so help Tusker retain its league title.

The winger had an excellent campaign last season at Kariobangi Sharks where he finished as a first runner-up top scorer at the club with 11 goals and 10 assists.

Speaking during their official unveiling at Ruaraka grounds, the 24-year-old expressed optimism to finish as the top scorer and help the defending champions retain their title for the third time.

“Tusker are the defending champions. It’s a quality team under the stewardship of our coach Robert Matano who has made his plans clear in retaining the league title,” stated the 24year old.

“Last season I scored 11 goals. This season I want to work on myself and get even better. My target this season is to score more than 20 goals and possibly be the top scorer or a runner-up.”

The event saw six other players officially unveiled into the team. Mmata will be joined by his teammates from Kariobangi Sharks; Tomas Teka and Boniface Onyango who play as defenders. The two will be hoping to replace Eugene Asike and Oruchum who have already left the club.

Additionally, Eric Otieno from Wazito and 18-year-old David ‘Daddy’ Odoyo are set to strengthen the striking department with Collins Otieno promoted from the Tusker Youth team brought in to add depth in the midfield.

Brian Opondo, an 18-year-old goalkeeper, joins the defending champions from Bidco. With Patrick Matasi opting to stay at the Breweries following a botched move to Police FC means Tusker will now have four official goalkeepers.

Head coach Robert Matano was optimistic the new signing would provide the needed squad depth to retain the title this season.

“We have brought in seven new players to bolster the squad ahead of the season. We have been tracking their progress and I believe they are going to provide good competition and the required squad depth as we work for the league resumption,” coach Matano said.

Matano has won the league title with Tusker twice and he’s keen for a third one.

The transitional committee had set the league to start on the 10th  only to postpone it a week ago to 24th of September.

Fixtures indicate that Tusker were set to play Posta Rangers in their opening fixture at Ruaraka grounds.
