Gladiators pip Badgers to retain league lead

Strathmore University Gladiators edged Parkroad Badgers 2-1 to maintain the top spot in the Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) men’s Premier League played at the City Park Stadium.

Former champions Kenya Police bounced back from a shock 2-1 defeat to Western Jaguars in their previous match to thump Mombasa Sports Club 3-0 at the same venue.

Wazalendo edged Jaguars 1-0 in the other men’s premier league encounter.

Gladiators lead the standings with 10 points having played four matches, recorded three wins and a draw.

Defending champions Butali Sugar Warriors are on seven points same as third-placed Police who have played more matches.

In the women’s premier league United States International University of Africa (USIU-A) edged Lakers Hockey Club 1-0 in the match played at Simba Club in Kisumu on Sunday.

Kenyan international Rhoda Kuira scored the lone goal of the match in the 47th minute to hand the university side three important points as the league starts to slowly pick pace.

The win takes USIU-A to joint top of the standings on seven points, the same as Strathmore University who are not in action this weekend.
