Reigning league champions Gor Mahia will be seeking revenge when they face Vihiga United in a mid-week Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League match at the Mumias Complex Stadium this afternoon.

Promoted side Vihiga stunned Gor 1-0 during their first leg clash in February, a result that left pundits amazed, but the record league champions who are enjoying a four matches winning streak will be eager to put matters straight.

Smarting from two back-to-back league victories against title rivals Sofapaka and Nairobi City Stars, K’Ogalo’s confidence is on another level and they are tipped to run over trouble ridden Vihiga who recently lost their head coach Sammy Okoth and technical director Nick Yakhama.

A win for Gor will see them leap to fifth spot in the league table with a match at hand, as they will be on 28 points from 16 matches.

Vihiga who are also staring at another relegation dog fight, need another miracle win against the league giants to help them in their quest to survive the axe. It is, however, not going to be an easy task for the hosts.

Gor coach Vaz Pinto has a lot of options to pick from his players as his side does not have any injuries.

In another high profile match this afternoon, bottom placed Mathare United will be up against AFC Leopards at Utalii grounds.

The match has high stakes since if Leopards win, they go to joint top of the table, but 2008 champions Mathare who have been languishing in an unfamiliar territory at the bottom of the log, will be keen to jump start their road to recovery with a win against their opponents.

“We got a point against Nzoia, now let’s aim for all three against Leopards,” said Mathare’s head coach Frank Ouna after watching his charges dig deep to come away with a point against Nzoia Sugar at the dreaded Sudi Stadium over the past weekend.

Ouna has called on his players to not take the foot off the pedal, and go all out for a win against league chasing Leopards to trigger their road to survival.

“We are in a position where we cannot afford to drop any more points. The fact that we are going up against a team fighting on the opposite end to us should not deter us but rather push us towards getting a monumental result that can be the basis of our rise,” Ouna said.
