General Service Unit (GSU) and Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) qualified for the quarter finals of the 2021 CAVB Men’s African volleyball club championship which entered Day Three on Tuesday.

The Kenyan representatives thrashed  their opponents in straight sets in their final preliminary matches to book slots for the championship quarter finals set for Friday in Tunisia’s capital Tunis.

GSU saw off Espoir of Congo in sets of 25-11, 25-14 and 25-12 to finish second in Group D on six points after two wins and one defeat.

Five-time champions Zamalek topped the group on nine points after winning all the three matches.

Debutants KPA bounced back from Monday’s to edge Burundi’s Rukinzo in sets of 25-23, 25-10 and 25-19 thus finishing second in Group A on five points.

In the Friday’s quarter finals, GSU will face four-time champions Esperance of Tunisia who finished top in Pool A while KPA will be up against favourites Zamalek.

GSU got back on track after registering victory in their Monday’s fixture while fellow countrymen KPA failed to make it two wins on the bounce.

The record national volleyball champions saw off Nigeria Customs by 3-1 sets to revive their chances of reaching the quarterfinals of the annual championship.

GSU had suffered a major setback in their Group D opening fixture after falling to five-time champions Zamalek in straight sets but they bounced back in style to dispatch the Nigerians with 23-25, 25-16, 25-22 and 25-18 at the Sidi Bousaid indoor arena.

Coach Gideon Tarus had blamed poor reception as their major undoing in their match against Zamalek on Sunday but has described the performance of the Red Berets as superb.
