I’m surprised Kimanzi called-up Were, says Migne

Immediate Harambee Stars head coach Sebastien Migne is shocked how his successor Francis Kimanzi made a u-turn and decided to call-up striker Jesse Were to the national team to face Uganda Cranes in an international friendly build-up match on Sunday, after he had been overlooked for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations outing two months ago.
“I respect Kimanzi a lot, in fact I think he is the best suited local coach for the national team job, but he didn't have any objection when I picked Masoud Juma instead of Were two months ago, so I'm shocked what has changed now,” Migne told People Sport.
Kimanzi has been Migne's assistant for one and half years before he replaced him as the head coach last month after Football Kenya Federation (FKF) terminated the Frenchman's contract following a mutual agreement between the two parties.
There was an uproar from local football enthusiasts when Migne preferred Masoud and Ovella Ochieng over the Zambia-based goal-getter, but he justified his actions by saying that Were had not scored a single goal for the national team in 26 call-ups.
“Zesco is just like Gor Mahia, they will always win the league, with or without the services of Were. Just like Gor Mahia will always win the league with or without Oliech,” he said.
