Tusker coach Robert Matano believes it is too early for any team to celebrate winning the FKF Premier League title with two matches remaining to the end the season.

Matano’s Brewers endured a frustrating trip to Muhoroni where they suffered a shock 2-1 defeat against relegation-threatened Wazito FC on Sunday.

The defeat coupled with Gor Mahia’s 2-0 victory against Ulinzi Stars at Nyayo Stadium meant Tusker relinquished the top spot as K’Ogalo moved two points clear with 67 points.

“I have been in this game for a very long time and my understanding is that it is still too early for any team to celebrate or even claim they have won the title,” said Matano when asked if Wazito’s defeat was a major setback to his title-chasing side.

“Look, just before Sunday matches, we were at the top of the table but after losing we gave the lead away, it shows you the fight is still on and no team can be underrated at this stage, but just like in 2020, this season may be decided on the final day.

“Gor Mahia have two points ahead of us and Nzoia are also breathing behind our neck on third spot though we have two points ahead of them, for me it is not easy to determine who will win the league, we must be patient and play our games to win. All we need now is to avoid mistakes, stay focused and win our matches.” Matano further called on his players to quickly forget about the defeat in Muhoroni and get ready to finish off the season in style.

“We must aim at a positive response [following the defeat against Wazito], my players are aware of the importance that comes with the remaining matches, we must be ready to win all our matches, and I am confident we will not slip up again,” added Matano.

“Wazito defeat somehow punctured our title ambitions but we still have two important matches to make amends and get the result that can give us the title.” Gor Mahia will face Kakamega Homeboyz in their next fixture at Nyayo Stadium, and wind up their matches against Nairobi City Stars on June 17.

Meanwhile, Tusker will return to Nairobi to host Posta Rangers at Kasarani Annex, then travel to face relegated Vihiga Bullets at Bukhungu Stadium on the final day.
