KDF teams win Easter Taekwondo event in Mombasa

 Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) emerged the overall winners during the Easter Tae-kwon-do Championship that was held at Sharka hotel in Mombasa, over the weekend. 

Ulinzi men’s and women’s teams grabbed a total of eight gold, one silver and four bronze medals to steal the limelight in the event. 

The runner-up position went to the Regional Tae-kwon-do team which bagged five gold, four silver and three bronze medals. 

Mombasa Cement emerged third overall after clinching two gold, five silver and two bronze medals while Kilifi County Tae-kwon-do club took the fourth position with one gold medal. 

Other ranked teams include Lunga Lunga, Mombasa County, Diani Tigers and Mathare North. 

In the men’s heavyweight category, Bakari Husra of KDF won gold after outwitting his opponents. 

In the middleweight category, Elijah Kimani of the Regional team floored his opponents Armstrong Mwanzije of Lunga Lunga and Proteus Okotsi of KDF to win a gold medal. 

In the men’s flyweight category, Daniel Dziwe of KDF won gold after beating Ismael Harrow of Mombasa cement who settled for silver. 

 David Memuti of Regional settled for a bronze medal in the highly charged competition. 

In lightweight, Geoffrey Ogonda of KDF also won a gold medal beating Majaliwa Ali of the Jomvu team and Hamisi Hassan of Lunga Lunga who won silver and bronze respectively. 

In the women’s category, the KDF women’s team harvested five gold, one silver medal and three bronze medals to emerge overall winners. 

Arch-rivals Mombasa Cement grabbed the second position with two gold medals, three silver and two bronze medals. 

Regional Women’s Taekwondo team emerged third with one gold medal, two silver and one bronze, while Mombasa County and Lungalunga teams emerged fourth and fifth positions respectively in the thrilling competition attended by a host of the martial art enthusiasts. 

In the women’s heavyweight category, Christine Boke of KDF was in imperious form as she won the first gold medal with Fatuma Chebet and Lenah Muguna, both from KDF, winning silver and bronze respectively. 

In middleweight, KDF’s Ann Ndundu won gold while Ruth Atieno of the Regional club settled for silver. 

In bantamweight, KDF’s Njeri Stella won gold while Aney Atieno of Mombasa County settled for silver. 

In fin weight, Esther Motari of Mombasa Cement topped with a gold medal followed by Agnes Njeri of Regional with silver while Rukia Juma of KDF emerged third with a bronze medal. 

Other players who performed well include Caroline Kimani of KDF who bagged gold in the welterweight category, Ann Horipa of KDF with a bronze in the featherweight and Doreen Mathekwa of KDF who took home a gold medal.
