Kenya finish third at Edmonton 7s after impressive show against Canada

National Sevens Team, Shujaa, finished third in the just concluded Edmonton 7s after a convincing 33-14 win over hosts Canada in a fixture staged at Commonwealth Stadium.

Fast rising Alvin Otieno who has been impressive in the Series for Shujaa scored a brace as Innocent Simiyu coached side scored five tries to secure third position.

Shujaa captain Nelson Oyoo outpaced his markers to score at the centre of the try box, with Levvy Amunga converting for a 7-0 lead.

Experienced Billy Odhiambo made the hard work after beating three defenders to offload the ball to Otieno who fend off his marker to score from close range. Amunga would convert again for a 14-0 lead.

Alex Russell cut the deficit with a brilliant try for Canada for a 14-7 score line heading to the intervals.

Canada would show intent soon after the break and would capitalise on a handling error by Shujaa to score a converted try by Jake Thiel. 14-14 scoreline.

However, Shujaa’s Willy Ambaka won the ball from restart kick-off and out sprinted the Canadians, to score the third try of the day.

Otieno returned to the scoresheet with his second try of the match, slicing through the Canadian defence for the fourth try of the day.

Kenya put the game beyond the hosts with a try by Odhiambo for a 33-14 final score.

Shujaa have managed podium finishes in both Canadian tournaments, having finished second last weekend at the Vancouver sevens.

Germany beat USA 24-19 in a match that had to be decided in sudden death to finish fifth in the Edmonton 7s.
