Kenya Lionesses player Angeline Opiyo gets maiden call up in Malta

3 months after Kenya Lionesses star Janet ‘Shebesh’ Okello completed a move to the Japanese side MIE Pearls Women’s Rugby Football Club, another star is set to follow suit with an overseas call up.

Angeline Opiyo has earned a call up to Kavallieri RFC in Malta.The towering second row began her rugby at Newlife Africa International.

It's at Newlife where her passion for the sizzling game began and took off intoA a blissful career.

Opiyo then followed her passion through into her teens where she harnessed her skills even more at Nakuru Day Secondary school.

Angeline then joined Top Fry Nakuru women rugby and transformed into a well-oiled rugby player under the masterful guidance of tactician and former Kenya Lioness head coach Felix Oloo.

Opiyo has the owners of being a is a two-time Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) National Girls High school 7s under 18 years gold medalist, a KRU Women 10 a side gold medalist, KRU women 10 a side league MVP, Elgon Cup gold medalist, Africa Women Cup silver medalist and a former skipper of Top Fry Nakuru ladies’ team.

Call up

''Kavallieri rfc said they’re excited to not only have me in their camp, but also to help me reach my career goals. Being in the squad is one thing but being in the team and proving to everyone else around me that I am good enough to help them achieve their targets will be top of my priorities,'' said Opiyo after learning on. her maiden call up.

''I hope through this opportunity I can inspire my generation by doing my best and acquiring more skills and exposure that in the near future I will be able to utilize to better my career and help Kenya Women Rugby move to the next level should I get an opportunity to do so,'' added Opiyo.

Opiyo now joins Okello and former Lionesses skipper Philadelphia Olando to have earned greener pastures in the recent months.

32-year-old Olando landed a lucrative role as head coach of the United Arab Emirates national women’s rugby team. Olando played for the Lionesses for the last 15 years and led Kenya to the Olympics in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.
