Tennis Kenya Secretary General Wanjiru Mbugua Karani became the first woman to be voted in as the Eastern Africa or Zone IV president during the 50th AGM of Confederation of African Tennis held in Nairobi on Friday.

Wanjiru also became the second African woman to be voted in as the Vice President of Confederation of African Tennis during the AGM as she garnered 6 votes against Comoros Mahamoud Zayya who managed 5 votes.

The vote had to go for a second round after Wanjiru and Zayya both attained 5 votes each in the first round of voting with one spoilt. The elective AGM ushered in new tennis leadership in Africa with Benin’s Jean Claude Talon being voted in as the new president of Confederation of African Tennis.

Talon, who is also the president of Benin Tennis garnered 25 votes over Nelson Amanze of Botswana who had 12 votes. There was one spoilt vote.

Jean Claude Talon takes over from Tunisia’s Tarak Cherif who had served for 19 years. The presidency was subjected to a second round of voting after no candidate garnered 3⁄4 of votes from the 38 federations present. The elective AGM was graced by International Tennis Federation (ITF) president David Haggerty.
