Kibiwott Kandie, Jepkosgei secure Kenyan double in Barcelona Half Marathon
Kenyan athletes Kibiwott Kandie and Joyciline Jepkosgei achieved a remarkable double victory at the Edreams Mitja Zurich Marato Barcelona, a prestigious World Athletics Gold Label road race.
Jepkosgei set a new course record in the women's event, clocking an impressive time of 1:04:29, while Kandie emerged victorious in the men's race with a stellar time of 59:22.
Kibiwott Kandie tough opposition
Jepkosgei's performance was particularly outstanding as she shaved off eight seconds from the previous course record, elevating herself to sixth on the world all-time list for the half marathon distance.
Meanwhile, Kandie, the second-fastest man ever in the half marathon, faced tough competition from compatriot Roncer Konga but ultimately secured the win.
In the women's race, after the withdrawal of Ruth Chepngetich, Jepkosgei engaged in a thrilling duel with Ethiopia's Senberi Teferi.
The duo surged ahead early on and maintained a blistering pace throughout the race, leaving their competitors trailing behind.
Jepkosgei's relentless rhythm eventually proved too much for Teferi, allowing her to cross the finish line in record-breaking fashion.
Kibiwott Kandie's surge
On the men's side, the race unfolded at a moderate pace initially before Konga made a decisive breakaway. However, Kandie, a seasoned marathoner, bided his time before making his move in the latter stages of the race.
With a strong surge, Kandie overtook Konga to clinch victory, showcasing his exceptional talent and tactical prowess.
