KPA and Ulinzi run riot in local basketball league contests

Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Ladies team and Ulinzi Mens team went on the rampage at the weekend with clinical wins as league action continued in different venues.

Defending Champions KPA who thrashed JKUAT-Lynx 94-34 at Makande Gymnasium in Mombasa, had a seamless and almost flawless performance at home-court as they posted one of their highest scores in the Premier League. About 10 infield players contributed to the carnage by KPA withVilma Ochieng contributing 20 points followed by the trio of Rachel Wandago, Yvonne Atieno and Madina Okoyi who posted 10 points apiece with KPA taking full control of proceedings.

Rare moments

The Dockers led comfortably across all quarters (25-09/24-00/20-10/25-15). Their territorial play,speed on attack and defense was exceptional as JKUAT struggled to cope quite literally. The University side who had rare moments of their own relied heavily on Whitney Mbeneka who posted 14 points and had a couple of assistsThe Lynx was often found in no mans land with ball handling and execution being their biggest undoing. They also committed several team fouls in the process which complicated their figures. JKUAT also had Jemima Okaka,Collete Olem and Diana Owinyo contributing 20 points to cover the difference in what was an embarrassing show for the away team led by coach Peter Kirimi.

In another Women Premier League contest,Kenyatta University Oryx stunned Eagle Wings 36-35 in a result decided by a single basket point at the end of the clock. The tense encounter however was cagey given the low scores by both sides. Wings tied 11-11 in the third quarter and won 13-11 in the final quarter but the opponents but lost 06-04 and 08-06 in the opening two quarters respectively. Emily Gicovi was once again the driving force with 12 points for herself assisted closely by Miriam Ingasatan with eight points. The duo of Sylvia Chacha and Faith Chebet put in a combined 12 points just to be able to get to the promised land coupled with KU defending territory.

On the other hand,Wings had Michelle Otinda on 12 points and Volnet Wanyama on eight points as the main driving force for the team.
