Kenya Cup newbies Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) tasted their first win in the league after a 12-6 win over Mwamba on Saturday.

The weekend also saw Kabras Sugar collect a bonus to return to the log summit even as two matches had to be called off due to 12 confirmed Covid-19 cases.

The Kenya Rugby Union on Friday confirmed the positive cases in the latest round of testing, forcing them to call off Menengai Oilers versus Impala clash that was to be played in Nakuru and the Nondescripts versus Strathmore Leos match that was to be played in Nairobi leaving just three matches to highlight the fourth round, where only one host triumphed.

The three matches played in Nairobi saw defending champions and hosts KCB beat Blak Blad 32-19 in Ruaraka before paving way for the Mwamba and MMUST to contest.

MMUST’s historic win over Kulabu helped climb from bottom of the standings to seventh with four points.

At RFUEA grounds, a heated exchange was projected between Kabras Sugar and Kenya Harlequin, but 14-men Kabras shocked the hosts 43-5 who had lost by three points to KCB a week earlier.

The performance according to Quins head coach was not up to standard for the team scheduled to play Strathmore Leos at home next.

“Kabras was down to 14 men after about 10 minutes and still they scored over 40 points so it’s a big defeat and we have a lot of work to do.

The boys did not put up a good show,” Harlequin boss Antoine Plasman told People Sport.

Kabras coach Mzingae Nyathi was glad his charges collected a bonus win on away grounds.

“We were down to 14 and ended up with an injured player (George Nyambua). Obviously we worked hard and we did our best in all the game situations.

You must be prepared for the unexpected and when we got the red card (Derrick Ashiundu) everyone got worried but we told the boys to calm down and keep applying the pressure for over 60 minutes and we are quite happy with the character the boys showed,” said Nyathi.
