Momanyi upbeat ah**d of third leg of AK Relay Series
Sprinter Jared Momanyi is buoyant ahead of the third leg of Athletics Kenya Relay Series set for Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday.
Momanyi, winner of the 400m during the inaugural Kip Keino Classic held at the same venue last October, is one of the athletes AK has invited to the third and final leg of the series.
He reckons he was not at his best in the opening two legs, but remains positive he is regaining his form at the right time with the big target being the world relays set for May 1-2 in Silesia, Poland.
The gunner at Embakasi Garrison says the Saturday races and subsequent national trials set for March 26-27 at Nyayo stadium will be very key.
“I am still in the top 10, that is why I got an invitation to the third leg. I want to push myself to win the race or at least finish in the top three before we get to the trials,” added Momanyi who was part of the national team that won bronze in the mixed relays at the Yokohama World Relays in 2019.
Momanyi who anchored the 4x400m team that had Maureen Thomas, Hellen Syombua and Aaron Koech says returning to the world event with an opportunity to do better is something he relishes.
“We were third behind the US and Canada and I still think that was a huge result.”
On Saturday, the serviceman will be up against the likes of Emmanuel Mutua who has been in good form in the opening two legs.
Others are Zablon Ekwam, Kevin Kipkorir, Nicholas Chirchir and David Sanaiyek, among others.
Meanwhile, AK’s vice-president and director of competitions Paul Mutwii has said participation in the third leg is strictly on invitation.
This weekend’s race categories include 100m, 200m, 100m hurdles, 800m and 400m.
