Mombasa to host 2022 Junior Chess contest next weekend

Candidate master and KCB’s Benjamin Magana has been spearheading training of juniors who are set to participate in the Kenya National Junior Chess Championship in Mombasa next weekend.

The national competition will be held at Khadija Secondary School from the first to the sixth of April 2022. Winners from each category in the tournament from under8 to under18 both boys and girls will form the Kenyan junior team that will be representing the country in the Africa Youth Chess Championship slated for June 2022 in Lusaka, Zambia. Magana has been using his vast experience in the game and knowledge to prepare them.

The coach exuded confidence that his team is ready for the championship. Additionally, he said through the training, he is also staying in shape as a player. 

He has been tutoring other juniors in Kitale, Transnzoia County qualifiers who are also going to participate in this year’s fete. 

Magana who plays for KCB Chess Club is also preparing for the Kenya National Chess League which continues in May after its resumption following the Covid-19 hiatus.
