Mwamba wins Driftwood Cup

The Driftwood Sevens rugby competition produced a new champion - Mwamba Rugby Club who faced off with Menengai Oilers in a tough final to win the match 21-7.  Mwamba is the third team to win the ongoing sevens circuit scheduled to return to Kisumu County in a fortnight.

Mwamba’s head coach Kepha Ndonji believes the Black Shirts now have a responsibility of going for the overall title courtesy of winning the coastal tour that has placed them at par with the Christie Sevens defending champions Strathmore Leos.

“We had planned a top-three finish but now that we have won the title, we have proved to ourselves that we are capable of going for the overall series title.  “It was a tough game and we had to come back from behind when we had our attitude changed and applied some good teamwork to win this match. Now our focus shifts to Dala Sevens and we need to return to the final to keep up with our new goal,” coach Ndonji said.

Menengai Oilers head coach Gibson Weru was hurt by the loss though satisfied by the performance.

“I commend Mwamba for the win, they deserved it. We started well but we did not go ahead and take the lead at half-time and they outplayed us. I’m satisfied with the performance so far; we have been very consistent in every leg so far and we have featured in all the semi-finals and now the final.

“ We are now looking forward to Dala with one mission, to go one better. Of course, we will need to win one or two legs to be able to win the overall title so it’s upon us to do well in the last three events,” coach Weru told People Sport.

Retaliatory fight

Oilers took the lead through a converted try by Mark Kwemoi but a retaliatory fight by Kulabu saw skipper Mike Okello, Daniel Taabu and Chrispin Onyango give their side a try.

Later, Taabu converted all the three to see his side walk away with Sh100,000 from Betsafe and the trophy.  Two-time winners KCB finished third after a comeback 21-14 win over Homeboyz.

Strathmore Leos winger Brunson Madigu was named the top try and the top points scorer for a double individual award while Mwamba’s playmaker Daniel Taabu was the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
