Mwatate FC set ambitious goals in first NSL season

Tuesday, December 1st, 2020 00:00 | By

Mwatate FC are targeting only one season in the Betika National Super League (BNSL) as they eye immediate promotion to FKF Premier League next season.

The side that was promoted to BNSL this season, narrowly missed out in 2018 following a tense post-match penalties loss to Shabana FC at the Kasarani Stadium in the promotion playoff.

The Taita Taveta-based side, however, made no mistake in their quest for promotion this year.

By the time coronavirus stopped football in the country, Mwatate had opened up an unassailable  lead at the end of the first leg of the FKF National Division Zone A to see them promoted alongside Zone B winners Silibwet FC and promotion play-off winners Soy United.

“Getting promoted to the next level in any competition is not easy. We’re glad we made it and we’re looking forward to moving to the next level,” team manager Christopher Nyamao told People Sport.

Formidable squad

Nyamao was categorical that they are coming into the league to compete for top honours.

Mwatate’s confidence that they will do well In their debut is partly attributed to the quality of players they have signed who have vast experience of playing in BNSL and KPL to reinforce the already formidable 19-man squad that won the team promotion.

“We had a very strong team and that’s why we got promoted. So we still have our soldiers and with the new signings, I can confidently say, we are not here to make up numbers,”said Nyamao.

Mwatate  are scheduled to launch their campaign against fellow newcomers and Zone B champions Silibwet FC in Bomet on match day one before welcoming Vihiga Bullets in Taita Taveta next.

BNSL was scheduled to kickoff this past weekend but with the Ministry of Sports allowing only top flight FKF Premier League  to return, the federation is yet to communicate new dates.
