My best yet to come, says Obiri after RAK super debut
Two-time world 5,000m champion Hellen Obiri says the best is yet to come after finishing second during the 2022 edition of Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon in the United Arab Emirates on Saturday morning.
On her debut race at the competition, Obiri was only beaten by Ethiopia’s Girmawit Gebrzihair Gebru who won the race in 1:04:14.
Obiri came in second after clocking 1:04:22, to beat her previous best of 64:51.
Kenya’s Sheila Chepkurui completed the podium formation in 1:04:36.
“I can tell you the best is still to come from me,” said Obiri.
“On Saturday I put into practice what I have been preparing for. The field was rich, so I know it can only get better,” she added.
The Olympic silver medalist who is under the Ricky Simms Management says they have lined up a number of races on the road.
“I will not be in any pressure because the athletes I will be facing are the same I have been up against on the track, so I am ready,” said the runners who recently won the Northern Ireland International Cross Country in Dundonald, the Great Britain, where she clocked 26:44 in the 8km race.
In the men’s competition, Kenya’s Rodgers Kwemoi came in second in 58:30 while Kenneth Kiprop Renju settled for third place in 58:35. The race was won by Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo who clocked 57:56.
