Nairobi Water Queens handball team manager Caroline Kusa has remained defiant and maintained that she expects nothing but glory from her girls this season.

Speaking at their Kaloleni training grounds in Nairobi on Wednesday, Kusa stated that her side  had no excuse but to retain the title they won last season.

“We are back, great and healthy. I have no injury concerns but just waiting for our fixture on the 11th of February against Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

“This is our season again and we have to defend the league title,” said Kusa who just led Nairobi Water from a triumphal East Africa Club championship in Zanzibar, December 2022 when they defeated JKUAT 35-23 to clinch a record tenth title in the African region.

Nairobi Water Queens currently top the Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) women’s league standings with 22 points, only two adrift from second-placed NCPB ladies and four from third-placed Ulinzi Sharks.

“Our biggest competitors are Ulinzi and NCPB. I am worried because they are closing the gap and that leaves us with no option but to now win home and away if we want to retain this title,” said Jack Herbert who is the head coach of Nairobi Water Queens.

Despite the head coach being wary, the mood at the camp is upbeat and exciting for the players.

Their captain Gladys Chillo’s confidence is unmatched as she gears up for the second leg when the league resumes this Saturday 4th of February.

Her biggest challenge remains to have a hundred per cent full squad training at any given time, taking into consideration that the majority of the players are employees of Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company, meaning that they have to juggle between their work schedules and training.

However, this has not deterred the champions from taking strides in their efforts to glory.

Chillo will now lead the league leaders again on the pitch as they resume the second leg on the 11th of February.

, while Kusa and Jack will be on touchlines with instructions that hopefully will help them defend their league title successfully, a record 12th time if they do in the history of Kenya women’s handball.
