Netherlands become first team to advance to World Cup quarters after beating US
The United States national team’s 2022 World Cup campaign is over after a 3-1 loss to the Netherlands.
The defeat did not come as a surprise at the end; the young Americans had been outclassed by a Dutch team that got goals from Memphis Depay and Daley Blind in the first half and a clincher from Denzel Dumphries in the second - minutes after Haji Wright had thrown the United States a late lifeline.
The US tried to pepper the Netherlands with stoppage-time shots, but the Dutch defence was formidable and the Americans struggled to get solid looks at goal.
The Dutch's win over the US means that they are the first team to get to the quarter-final stage of the World Cup tournament.
The Netherlands will face the winner of the game between Argentina and Australia which will be played at 10 pm.
