The proposed new Talanta Stadium that was initially set for construction at the Jamhuri Sports Ground in Nairobi could now be moved to Mombasa, Cabinet Secretary for Sports Ababu Namwamba has hinted.

Although it seemed directional and clear that the stadium could be built in Nairobi during the initial stages, it has now emerged that the final decision regarding the location of the ‘football only’ multi million facility is yet to be finalized.

Speaking while appearing before the National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Sports, CS Ababu was coy on the location of the Stadium lined up as one of Kenya’s host venues for the 2027 African Cup of Nations.

In response to a question tabled by Mwingi West Charles Nguna, Ababu told the Committee that there were ongoing deliberations between erecting the football stadium in Nairobi or Shanzu area of Mombasa County.

“The designs for the proposed, new Talanta Stadium are done. In designing this stadium, we considered two potential venues and therefore the designs pretty much took into account the characteristics of those potential venues and that is Nairobi at the Jamhuri Sports Ground along Ngong Road and Mombasa at the Shanzu area. I can confirm to this Committee that a decision will be made before the ground breaking ceremony is done,” said Ababu.

The Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports is working in unison with the Ministry of Defense in the delivery of needed infrastructure for the 2027 African Cup of Nations that is just 39 months away.

Ababu noted that the groundbreaking ceremony will be done next month and its construction is scheduled to take 18 months. The total budget for the new stadium is not yet established since the process is at the costing stage and details will be given later.

Should the decision to take part of AFCON 2027 to Mombasa, it will birth excitement among the locals and neighboring counties of the coastal city such as Taita Taveta, Kwale, Kilifi and Tana River who will get a coveted opportunity to sample the test of the African Cup of Nations which is Africa’s premier football tournament.
