No prize yet for KPL winners until new sponsor is found
Last season’s Kenya Premier League (KPL) defending champions Gor Mahia, runners-up to fourth-placed finishers Bandari, Sofapaka and Tusker respectively will wait until the league organisers land another sponsorship deal to be paid their winning bonuses.
KPL Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jack Oguda has acknowledged that they owe the four clubs their winning bonuses but since the exit of SportsPesa, they are unable to pay the clubs.
“No club has been paid their winning bonuses. The amount is accrued and paid upon the receipt of the sponsorship fee but SportPesa terminated the agreement. The clubs will have to wait until we land a new sponsorship deal,” said Oguda.
Gor Mahia are owed Sh4.5 million. KPL suffered a major jolt after betting firm SportPesa closed shop following a protracted war with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) over tax payable and the winners’ stake in a bet.
