NSL: Talanta open gap as Police FC thump Gusii
FC Talanta have shown they are the team to beat in the Betika National Super League in the race for premiership promotion next season.
Following their 1-0 win over rivals and immediate challengers Fortune Sacco on Saturday, Ken Kenyatta’s charges have now opened a six-point gap at the apex of the second tier league with a match in hand.
Anthony Gicho’s solitary goal in the 64th minute, courtesy of a penalty, was enough to push Talanta to 57 points off 29 matches. This was a match billed as title decider and Talanta aced it with discipline and courage.
The impressive Fortune Sacco under Nichodemus Omasete came close on a couple of occasions through their danger man Stephen Onyango but were unlucky. The Kirinyaga based side is second on the standings with 51 points off 30 matches played.
“The league is tight and it is still far from over so we cannot celebrate just yet. However, I am happy with the character of my players that ensured we picked full points. We can always reorganise and do some things better in the coming matches.
We just have to be patient and focused, we cannot think about promotion now. This match was important but now it is done so we think of the next,” said Kenyatta.
Meanwhile, Kenya Police FC still kept their promotion hopes alive with a 3-0 demolition of Gusii FC.
Samuel Ndungu, Alvin Mageni and David Oluoch had the goals for Police to push them to 47 points and to third place.
Police have had an indifferent campaign up until they changed coaches a few weeks ago bringing in former Kenyan international John Bobby Ogola.
Kibera Black Stars are starting to feel the heat and for the second consecutive game lost.
The visiting Mwatate United FC silenced the Slum Boys 2-1 Saturday at the former’s homeground in Ligi Ndogo Grounds.
Black Stars are now fourth on the log with 47 points off 30 matches with Coach Elvis Ayany eyeing promotion with the rank outsiders.
