Former Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Sam Nyamweya has written to President Uhuru Kenyatta, urging him to rescue one of the country's most popular sport.

In a letter dated October 19, 2019, Nyamweya told the President that
the country's football was on the verge of losing its great granary
that has produced superstars like Dennis Oliech, McDonald Mariga,
Victor Wanyama, Musa Otieno, Mike Okoth and by extension Liverpool star Divock Origi.

“Mr President, the Kenyan Premier League is on its knees after the key
supporters exited the scene due to one reason or the other. With no sponsors, the Kenyan Premier League is threatened with a total collapse.

The league which has over 700 players and support staff, has
been left with no source of income due to the unavailability of
sponsors,” Nyamweya said.

He added: “It is even worse that the league which apart from offering
employment to thousands and entertainment for millions may have to
come to a halt because the clubs cannot afford the basics which
include transport for players and meals.”

Nyamweya goes on in his letter: “I pen this to you Mr. President Sir,
pleading for your assistance. The situation is dire. We are faced with a
situation where the greatest sport in Kenya will die. It is my humble
plea to you to come to the aid of our football by directing the Sports
Ministry to appropriate finances from the Sports Fund to aid the
Kenyan Premier League, National Superleague and Women Premier League.”
He said as a stakeholder in football, having served as the president
of FKF, he understood what the sport meant to the youth.
“I have confidence that with your help, we will rebuild this game,” he said.
