On form Cereals keen to make it to two titles in a row
Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) National Super Cup defending champions, National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB), and Nairobi Waters Queens, made light of their opponents at the weekend, to kick off their title defence on a high.
Cereals who won their maiden Super Cup in 2019 and with the 2020 season cancelled due to the Covid-19 outbreak, are eager to retain their title and at the weekend, made their intentions convincingly clear by winning both of their Group A matches to cruise through to the semifinals. The champions defeated Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) 26-22, and Black Mamba 31-22, to sail through. Team captain Timothy Kirimi while acknowledging that though the Super Cup is not a single game affair, he is confident, they’re going all the way to retain their title.
“We’re excited that our training is bearing good fruits.
We know the task ahead and now that we’re through to the semifinals, we won’t rest this week to make sure we qualify for the finals,” Kirimi offered.
Kirimi said their target is to complete a double and repeat what they did in the 2019 season where they won the league as well as the Super Cup titles.
“We won the league and the Super Cup in the season before covid, 2019, while the 2020 season was cancelled. So in 2021, we successfully defended our league title, and we’re now targeting to defend the Super Cup as well, and complete a season double,” Kirimi said.
Cereals are likely to meet either Kenyatta University or General Service Unit (GSU) in the semifinals on Sunday. The duo are meeting on Saturday to determine who will finish second in Group B.
K.U drew 21-21 with Strathmore, while GSU lost 28-15 to the same Strathmore side. Strathmore on the other hand, are also through to the semifinals and are likely to face either KDF or Black Mamba, who are also scheduled to meet on Saturday to determine Group A runner’s up.
