Openda returns as Telkom changes name to Blazers

Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) women’s Premier League champions Telkom will now be known as Blazers and not Queens of Hockey as earlier suggested.

The change of name will come at the end of the season where the club formerly sponsored by the telecommunication company look poised to win a record 22nd title. It also coincides with the return from retirement of veteran tactician Jos Openda, less than a year after he stepped down.

Openda said the players unanimously voted for Blazers as opposed to Queens which they felt had negative connotations.

“Queens of hockey sounded more of slay queens, something the club didn’t want to associate themselves with,” said Openda. KHU’s deputy match and fixtures secretary Moses Majiwa acknowledged receipt of the changes, saying: “ In as much we acknowledge their intentions, we have to wait until the end of the season to make it official,” he said.

Telkom looked out of steam at the start of the season after the departure of Openda before the exit of the telecommunication company in July jolted them even further but now sit top of the log with 26 points from 10 outings and remain the only unbeaten side in the eight-team league.
