Nairobi Chapel get baptism by fire in opener
Valentine Akinyi scored a goal in each quarter as Multimedia University battered debutants Nairobi Chapel 11-0 in the first week of the Kenya Hockey Union Women’s Super League at City Park Stadium.
Akinyi scored brilliant field goals, the first coming in the 10th minute after Pacifica Mutinda, who notched a brace, had opened the floodgates four minutes earlier.
Her other goals came in the 22nd, 36th and 47th minutes in an encounter that also saw Winnie Wanyoike grab a hat-trick as well as individual goals from Anne Boke and Norah Boke to complete the rout.
Nairobi Chapel coach Emmanuel Were said it was learning experience from the debutants.
“From my perspective, defensive lapses were our undoing. Even in the heavy defeat, there were positives which we can work on to better the performance.
As the league advances, I am certain the players will adjust to the demands,” said Were.
In the Women’s Premier League, Amira Sailors had a perfect start to the season, beating newly-promoted Orange Leonas 3-0 courtesy of goals from captain Leah Omwandho, Sandra Vodoti and Madowo Yvonne.
In the Men’s Super League, Elijah Magiya was the hero as his solitary goal for promoted JKUAT Wildcats was enough to bag maximum points against a misfiring Multimedia University Trojans.
Meanwhile, Vikings drew 1-1 against Technical University of Kenya while 2012 Men’s Premier League champions Sikh Union started life in the Super League with a 4-2 win over Parklands Sports Club.
