Kenya to host U20 Africa Barthes Trophy for three years
Kenya will host the U20 Africa Barthes trophy for three straight years starting April 19 in Nairobi.
Defending champions and hosts Kenya are drawn in Pool A with Madagascar, Tunisia and Zambia in the eight-team competition.
The Barthés Trophy is the only junior rugby competition in Africa with rankings, and Kenya are top seeds courtesy of a memorable 21-18 win over Namibia at the KCB Sports Club last April.
Kenya top the top tier standings ahead of Namibia, Senegal, Madagascar, Tunisia, Zimbabwe, Côte d’Ivoire and Zambia in that order.
“The U20 Barthés Trophy marks the first tournament in the Rugby Africa calendar this year.
We believe that we need this kind of commitment as shown by Kenya Rugby Union to strengthen our sport for a sustainable and strong future,” said Guédel N’Diaye on behalf on Rugby Africa president.
He added: “With solid commitment, we can equally build a successful broadcast and commercial programme around the event.
The young players are our major asset in terms of growing participation and fan base.
The U20 Barthés Trophy tournament speaks to our long-term strategy for Africa to become the breeding ground of the next generation of world class athletes.”
Welcoming the event back to Kenya for the second straight time, KRU chairman Oduor Gangla said: “It is indeed a great honour to all of us. Special mention to our Ministry of Sports under the astute leadership of Amina Mohamed who have supported our bid.
We will work closely with Rugby Africa, the government, commercial sponsors, media and other stakeholders to ensure successful delivery of the event.”
