Play-off spots at stake as Kenya cup resumes

Kenya Cup matches resume with six crucial fixtures to break or make a necessary step to claim playoffs positions in Round 14 Saturday.

The top three sides complete away doubles over the next three (4-6) in a hostility round highlighted by Harlequins against Western Bulls match that will leave the loser in a hot 11th seat.

Kenya Harlequins head coach Dominique Habimana is optimistic his charges boosted by key changes will start on a high and maintain the tempo throughout the 80 minutes.

“We have worked on our errors and we are looking forward to a good match. We have inspirational players in the squad and we hope to start off on the right track and remain committed to the ball and convert all that pressure into points,” Harlequins coach Dominique Habimana told Wikendi Sport.

Their first meeting in round three saw Bulls claim their seasonal first win off a celebrated comeback in a man one show where centre Derrick Ashiundu conquered the midfield in one half with a hat-trick, all tries converted for a 21-19 win.

Bulls coach Solomon Obiero will now be tested to claim a rare double at home soil where both confidence and caution will be observed as the visitors have an improved line-up with a better bench and internationals including Shujaa forwards Herman Humwa and Willy Ambaka in the party.

Harlequin steps in the Ring sitting 10th with 17 points, a win, four points above relegation threatened Bulls who have won once at home off a 15-5 win over Stanbic Mwamba in Round 8.

The highlight clash hosted by Bulls in Kakamega is among four fixtures to be played outside the capital where Nakuru county will host two as Kisumu host Mwamba.

The weekend will interestingly throw in upsets that could make or break a crucial step towards achieving an assured place in the playoffs for the top three who will tour the next three playoffs hopefuls.

Log leaders Kabras squeezed a bonus win against fourth-placed Impala off a 27-3 score in the first meeting and will be at Impala club for the return where a bonus is necessary to stay above the defending champs by a point.

Rivals, KCB and Homeboyz will also be away, Nakuru in particular to confirm doubles over sixth placed Wanyore and fifth placed Menengai Oilers respectively. The Deejayz won 25-20 against Oilers in Round 3 as KCB whitewashed Nakuru 50-13.

The other clash to be played in Nairobi will have Nondies seek to confirm an earlier 38-25 win to put off an attempt by the ninth-placed students to leapfrog them in the other clash to be played in Nairobi.
