The 2019/20 Kenya Cup 15s league kicked off on Saturday with a bang as highlighted by first-round double-header upset by Impala Saracens and Kabras 89-0 away win over Kisumu.

Kabras, runners-up last year, recorded an 89-0 win over the newcomers as they made a statement that resonated with coach Henley Du Plessis’ long-term plan.

Du Plessis goal is to grasp the standings command and maintain it after 16 rounds for two crucial advantages that will see the top-two host direct semis while the standings commander will host the finals.

The latter gave the sugar millers the right to stage the finals in Kakamega for the first time in 2018.

Kabras seek revenge this season after losing the final at home to the defending champs who opened their hunt with a 48-11 home win over Western Bulls.

Menengai Oilers at their home ground at Nakuru ASK, has put other contestants on alert following a bewildering 31-5 win over Nakuru to claim a first Kenya cup scalp over Wanyore in their second league appearance.

In Nairobi, the double-header claimed the rights of the sparkling opening round highlights when Homeboyz struck Harlequins 26-16 while Impala came from 7-0 behind to shock Nondies 26-10.

The Ngong Road derbies also registered mixed results for Harlequins and Impala new coaches. Impala coach Mitch Ocholla bagged the first win while Harlequins returning boss Dominique Habimana picked lessons despite a good line breaking backline unit.
