Kenya Sevens team head coach Innocent “Namcos” Simiyu is  pleased with the progress his 29-man squad has made in training as he seeks to secure better terms for the players.

Speaking at RFUEA grounds, Nairobi, shortly after completion of a training session yesterday, the Shujaa boss said players’ welfare is his main concern after a challenging year.

“We are happy with the progress of the players so far. The break was too long and we had to start from scratch.

The players have responded well to the challenge and are working hard,” said Simiyu.

“I believe this year has been one of the lowest points in rugby but we thank God for the good health of the players and the management team. For us now, health and wellbeing of the players is key.

Taking precautions, training and ensuring the players start to earn some income from rugby is our priority for now,” Simiyu told the People Sport.

Shujaa team manager Eric Ogweno was glad three of Shujaa players who featured in the SX10 franchise are back except for Oscar Dennis who is on his recovering from multiple fractures after being involved in a road accident upon return from Bermuda.

The quartet - Collins Injera, Oscar Dennis, Andrew Amonde and Willy Ambaka - were part of the SX10 team, a new franchise comprising members of South Africa and Kenya sevens.

“Our plan is to give everyone a chance to go through the selection process and pick the best.”

Ogweno also echoed coach Simiyu’s plan to see the players earn a living from the sport.

“We’re actively engaging the Kenya Rugby Union board through the CEO and the national squads committee to ensure we get the best possible contracts for the players in the current circumstances.”
