Even as schools celebrate the government order for resumption of co-curricular activities, the wait for Kenya Secondary School Sports Association (KSSSA) proper continues as the ministry works on the modalities for the full resumption of activities.

KSSSA national secretary David Ngugi yesterday said they have done all the paperwork to enable the games fully resume.

“We also have trained teachers on the health protocols to be followed,” he said.

Ngugi who doubles up as Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Associations (FEASSSA) secretary-general, made it clear that the local inter-schools games allowed by the ministry are friendlies and not competitions under the KSSSA games championship structure.

“If you carefully interpret it, it is for schools to organise internal competitions or friendlies with other schools. However, the last paragraph is clear that the ministry is working on modalities for full resumption.

“This means KSSSA games are yet to be authorised,”  Ngugi, told People Sport yesterday.

The comes almost two years after schools were closed and sports events halted following the outbreak of Covid-19 in the country in March 2020.

On Monday, directors of education received a communication from ministry allowing school heads to engage learners in internal co-curricular activities and guided inter-schools contests on weekends and after classes.

“In February 2021, the Ministry of Education, with the support of the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Sports, Culture, and Heritage, developed the Covid-19 Safety and Health Protocols/Guidelines that will enable the gradual and safe resumption of co-curricular activities in educational institutions which were suspended in 2020,” Principal Secretary, State Department of Early Learning and Basic Education, Julius Jwan said in a statement on Monday.

The PS said protocols have been cascaded to all levels and disseminated to all schooland strict adherence to the current guidelines prepared by the ministry should be observed with the initial focus on non-contact/low-contact activities.
