Sports Kenya board held a record 52 meetings in a financial year and in the process inflated their allowances twofold, Auditor General Nancy Gathungu has disclosed.

Board members have been cited in a report over financial improprities that include irregular benefits and inaccuracies in revenue allocation.

Sports Kenya has also been accused of irregular hiring of facilities and unsupported pension, salaries and gratuity arrears.

Gathungu says that the chairman of Sports Kenya board of directors was irregularly paid Sh1.3 million in sitting allowances for the 52 meetings the board held for the period under review.

“This is in contravention of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) approved rates,” noted the auditor.

During the 52 sittings, the chairman pocketed Sh25,000 in sitting allowance against the SRC approved rates of Sh20,000 per sitting resulting in an overpayment of Sh260,000 during the period under review.

“In the circumstances, the validity of the amount paid in excess of the approved rate was not a proper charge to the public funds,” states the audit reports.

The audit shows that the board of directors’ allowances included Sh1.06 million and Sh9.99 million in honoraria and sitting allowances respectively.
