Star-studded Kenya Police yet to pick up any point as league gains momentum
Nairobi City Stars and Kenya Police must have now woken to the grim reality that football can sometimes be cruel.
Both teams have lost all their fixtures since the 2022/2023 Football Kenya Federation (FKF) kicked off on November 19 with the statistics worrying their fans who had placed so much hope in them and especially given their jaw-breaking display of sorts last season.
City Stars have played three matches and lost all with Tusker adding them in their list of casualties in a 4-1 whacking at the weekend and with it marking the biggest loss in the second round of action.
Like Simba wa Nairobi, Kenya Police who gained promotion to the top flight league last year have started feeling the heat of the big-time action after losing two matches on a trot, the latest of which was a 1-0 beating by Kakamega Homeboyz on Saturday.
Significantly, the team had been touted as one of those to watch due its marquee signings with the deal reportedly coming with employment opportunities in the Kenya Police Service.
The team made a strong statement of intent upon being promoted to the top league from the less prestigious National Super League (NSL) by bravely holding Gor Mahia to a 1-1 draw on November 6, 2021.
Perhaps not done with exhibiting their magical charm in the top tier league, Police went ahead to tame Bidco United 3-0 on December 19, went ahead to hammer Vihiga Bullets 4-0 on January 22 before putting the icing on the cake with a 2-1 victory over Mathare United on January 15.
The position was by any standards worth of respect for the “Afandes” considering that Police was above in the pecking order in the league than seasoned sides like Kariobangi Sharks, Posta Rangers, Ulinzi Stars and even Nzoia Sugar.
Police had even lured some of Kenya’s finest footballers who had featured for local giants before and end tested waters outside Kenyan borders including Musa Mohammed (ex Gor Mahia and Zambia’s Nkana), Duncan Otieno (ex AFC Leopards) and John Makwatta (ex AFC Leopards and UIlinzi Stars), Cliftone Miheso (ex Gor and AFC Leopards) before former Gor Mahia and Tanzania’s Dar Simba midfielder Francis Kahata joined the groove.
In the meantime, Tusker have taken an early lead in the league with nine points following a slim 1-0 win over AFC Leopards in Kasarani.
Three other teams including Gor Mahia, Kakamega Homeboyz and KCB are in a joint second position with three points less.
For Zedekiah Otieno’s KCB, the team registered the weekend shocker in a 1-0 win over Bandari at Mbaraki Sports ground in Mombasa.
