Tough luck
Impala women’s rugby team remained on top of the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) 10-aside league standings despite failing to rise to the occasion at home on Sunday after they shared spoils with Mwamba at Impala grounds.
The second leg of the women 10s series was won by Mwamba courtesy of a superior three points advantage.
Mwamba registered the first win in their meeting off a 15-5 score while Impala retaliated with a 17-7 win in the final match of the day.
With a win securing four points to a team and a draw securing two points as a loss means a single point, Kulabu ladies kicked of the competition on a high registering a 26-7 win over Northern Suburbs in their first match before shocking Impala 15-5 in their first meeting, then returned to confirm earlier win over Suburbs with a 21-0 win.
Mwamba gained from the win to climb up by a place to occupy second spot, now on 39 points, while Nakuru dropped to third place on 19 points and Suburbs are fourth on 17 points in the first tier standings which are being commanded by Impala on 41 points.
The women’s 10s series is expected to feed the national sevens and f15s teams with top players ahead of a scheduled a busy year.
Lionesses will be contesting for the Olympic honours while the 15s team will be fighting to earn a place in the Women’s Rugby 15s World Cup.
Tournament director Leonard Njuguna said the work the local coaches were doing will have a positive impact in the scheduled Kenya Lionesses camps.
“We are amazed with such a competitive top tier competition. It’s very impressive with good quality of rugby that ultimately had to be decided by points difference.
It shows all the coaches are working hard and the new rivalry will certainly improve the competition in both tiers.
In the long run the Kenya Lionesses will of course get fit and quality players for the 2021 season in both the 7s and 15s campaigns.”
Leonard Njuguna who also doubles up as the new Rugby Development Officer-Nairobi Metropolitan region told People Sport.
