Volleyball association to launch beach volleyball league in Nyandarua
Kenya Volleyball Association (KVA) has announced that it will help Nyandarua set up beach volleyball in the County as it moves to popularize the sport in the country.
KVA vice president, Charles Nyamberi said it is evident the sport can be popular after Kenya sent a team of women beach volleyball to the on going Tokyo Olympic Games.
“We did not know that by sending our beach volleyball team to the Olympics, our team would be representing the whole of Africa,” Nyamberi said.
He promised to team-up with the association vice treasurer Moses Mbuthia to sponsor two beach volleyball tournaments in Nyandarua as soon as the County Sports executive Mary Ann Gathigia ensures playing grounds are available.
“We want Nyandarua to be launching pad for beach volley in Mount Kenya, a region where regular volleyball is the main sport,” Nyamberi said as he handed over beach volleyball nets and balls to Governor Francis Kimemia.
Nyamberi said this in Ol Kalou, Nyandarua County at the weekend during a two-day open volleyball tournament organize by the County.
Kisii University was awarded the men trophy after playing just one set in the final after Bullets of Naivasha gave up due to fatigue. Kisii won that set in 25 against 23.
Bullets players were too tired to continue with the final after they battled Shaka from Nyeri in a semi final game that lasted over two hours, and went for the final immediately, during the tournament held at the Ol Kalou Arboretum.
To reach the final Kisii University had dismissed Nyahururu 3-0 while Bullet won 3-2 against Shaka in the semis.
In the men quarters, Bullet hit Comboni of Gilgil 3-0, Nyahururu beat Royal Fresh of Nyeri 3-2, JKUAT lost to Shaka 2-3 and Kisii beat Ndunyu Njeru 3-1.
In the ladies final Young Spikers from Nyandarua carried the day after beating JKUAT 3-0 of sets 25-16, 25-14 and 25-19.
Young Spikers had beaten Flush Queen of Nyandarua 3-0 in one of the semis while JKUAT beat Nakuru with a similar margin.
The tournament attracted 10 men and five women teams.
