Water drown NCPB to maintain league lead
Brenda Arivisa score six goals while her team-mates Rose Abongo and Merina Andala contributed five each to see the status quo remain as Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) women’s league defending champions Nairobi Water beat arch rivals National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) 30-21.
The two sides exchanged leads in the early minutes of the game but Water pulled a way to take a six-goal advantage as the two sides headed for the break. The millers unsuccessfully attempted a comeback in the second half but Water remained firmly in the lead for the winner. NCPB’s Sarah Mabonga, who was a thorn in Water’s flesh, painfully watched her nine goals go down the drain as her team tasted a first defeat.
“Teams are not making an effort to beat is or even play competitive handball. We played casually and the fact that we picked a comfortable nine-goal win says a lot about the kind of opposition we are getting from the league. We are yet to see what the other top teams, especially Ulinzi Sharks, have up their sleeves but we are craving competition,” said Nairobi Water coach Jack Ochieng.
The tactician is looking at resting Gladys Chilo, who managed four goals in the NCPB encounter, for the remaining part of the season as she prepares for maternity leave.
In the Men’s Premier League, Black Mamba managed a narrow 30-27 over Kenyatta University.
