‘We shall look for someone worth leading FKF’- Mariga promises young players in Kenya
Former Harambee Stars and Inter Milan midfielder McDonald Mariga has urged upcoming footballers in the country to stay put as he tries to engage relevant stakeholders to look for an appropriate boss to lead Football Kenya Federation.
According to Mariga, the current FKF boss Nick Mwendwa has just been complaining and looking for scapegoats during his tenure because he has failed the federation.
“It’s a disgrace someone playing for the national team to be paid Ksh 1000 as allowance, I shall try my best and look for President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy as we seek to look for a leader worth leading FKF,” Mariga said
Mariga’s comments comes in the wake of Mwendwa’s comments on national television that Kenya lacked quality players.
Mariga could not fathom how the same Kenya produced four players who plied their trade in Europe’s best teams, with special mention going out to Dennis Oliech his brother Victor Wanyama and Michael Olunga.
“You can’t say Kenya lacks quality players, yet we have produced players who have played in Europe’s top leagues, I myself going on to win the champion’s league under José Mourinho,” Mariga said.
Mwendwa, who was in an interview with a local station, said the key reason why stars perform poorly was because it lacked Kenya quality players that can perform at the highest stage.
“The work that needs to be done is we need to bring the talent to the table to record good results, which comes with quality players,” Mwendwa said.
Mwendwa further revealed the inclusion of celebrated coaches José Mourinho and Mikel Arteta to the national team will not in change the fortunes of the team.
“Even if you bring Mourinho or Arteta, the work that needs to be done must start from the young players and lowest level that we can nurture to perform at the highest level,” Mwendwa
The FKF boss has been at loggerheads with football fans and stakeholders, with his woes as president of Football Kenya Federation moving to another level after Sports CS Amina Mohamed ordered Sports Registrar to audit the Federation accounts a week ago.
CS Amina directed the Sports Registrar to undertake inspection of Football Kenya Federation (FKF) “in accordance to the provisions of Sports Act 2013.”
