Western athletics boss hoping for return to normalcy
Athletics Kenya officials in the Western region are keenly awaiting recommendations on resumption of sporting activities in the country.
Western region AK secretary Homar Mugalitsi said the report will help them chart the way forward.
“We have already missed out on track and field activities that were scheduled to take place right from the sub-county level to nationals,” said Mugalitsi.
“As a branch, we also feel the whole 2020 season has been badly affected but we believe things will resume to normalcy soon so that we can embark on our programmes.
“This season was earmarked for an intensive and elaborate programme to change the trend in this region which has little passion when it comes to athletics.
We have observed and realised there is great potential that needs to be tapped here,” said Mugalidza.
Mugaldza, who is also the Vihiga County Secondary Schools Sports Association boss, regretted that many talented athletics stars will miss out on their targets due to age limits imposed on students.
He added that the branch has been overly reliant on Mt Elgon for talent but they are working to ensure that the sport is well embraced in other areas in the region.
“We believe we can come up with many stars for short races who can shine at the international level.
