The sandstorm blew in from the Sahara Desert over the weekend also shrouded Mauritania, Morocco, and the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago off the coast of northwestern Africa.

As a result, all eight airports on the island were forced to close on Sunday, stranding tourists.

The Ministry of Environment of Senegal issued a red alert on Monday as the dust storm is expected to stay in the country till Thursday. (Xinhua)
