Great leap in Google search experience with AI offering
Google, could you please call the salon and book an appointment for next Thursday at 10:00 am? Yes, this will soon be possible with Google as it has gone AI.
New AI features has been added to google search, google map, photos, and workspace, plus Google has also developed its own Chatbot its calling Bard.
With all these new AI infused features, using google will feel like moving from a manual to an automatic. The new features, said Google CEO, will help Google deliver on its mission which is to organize the world information and make it readily available.
Google Search
With search, you will soon be able to ask Google to search using whole sentences unlike piecemeal snippets we currently use. Google search will then return a new integrated page with more information and choice. It will give you an overview of your search, with extra links to allow further depth into your search. This google says will make search smarter and searching simpler.
This is search using prompts, search utilizing AI. Once you’ve made your search, the returns will offer an option with follow-up questions to further fine tune your search. This will open a new conversational page mode, with deeper search options. This google says, is search supercharged.
Google Map
On maps Google has infused an immersive view for routes. This is how it will work. Say you need to drive from town to an address in Westlands. You will be able to visualize the entire route on map before you embark. It will show you all the landmarks in a birds eye view mode. What’s more, it will give you a traffic and weather update on the route. This will let you adjust your commute in case its raining or the is road traffic jammed, bumper to bumper.
Photos
Google photos have been enhanced with an eraser that will help you remove unwanted distractions from photos. If for example, at the time of taking the photo you we’re carrying a bag, and its straps are a distraction, you will easily be able to erase them. Editing has also been made much easier with the Magic Editor. This tool will help you adjust figures on the photo - by literally moving - and it has lighting and darkening capabilities as well.
Gmail
A new feature on Gmail called Help Me Write, will compose emails for you. Here you will offer Help me Write a prompt, such as write a reply to the sales team asking why your order has been delayed. Gmail will write out the whole email and offer you a final version to edit.
Workspace
Help Me Write under Google docs will have a drop down window (called Side kick) which will help you finish your writings. This is how it will work. Suppose you are writing an essay and got stuck. You will pull down Side Kick and input the necessary prompt and it will yield possible suggestions on how to finish you essay. Or maybe you are working on a presentation, you could prompt side kick to compile all the speaker notes for each slide.
Help me organize (sheets).
With Google sheets, you won’t have to make tables anymore. Help me organize will get that done for you. You just pull down the Help Me Organize prompt window, input your needs and just like that all your commands will reflect on sheets. Let us say you are organizing a fund raising event at the church. You will offer that prompt to sheets, tell it the inputs you need and it will come up with a table with columns for names, amount, and maybe totals.
Under Google slides there is Help me Visualize that will follow your text prompts and generate images based on their command.
Bard
Google has also introduced its own chatbot to rival ChatGPT, they are calling it Bard. It has been under works and now has improved skills in Math, logic and reasoning. Bard has also been added with tools and search, enabled to export emails, and you can access google workspace from it.
You can also programme on Bard. It has learned more than twenty programming languages including JavaScript, Python, C++ among others. Such programming will be easy because you will be using prompts. This echos what Nvidia’s - world largest chipmaker - Jensen Huang said, AI has democratized coding.
LLM
But how does it work? How is Google able to do all the above? Its using a large language model called PaLM 2. LLMs are machine learning models that learn and generate human language. LLM’s got good when researchers expanded data sets used to train them. They developed complex nuanced language and generated language more eloquently, i.e, they became more like humans in enunciating language.
LLMs speak prompt, and that’s how you will be able to tell the machine what you need, and how you need it. Prompt design is the art and science of figuring out what text to feed into LLM to get the feedback you seek. For example you can prompt an LLM to make a list of items your daughter will need when school reopens. Learning to prompt will be very useful in the coming years as google search and most computing interaction will be using prompts. The better you will be at prompting, the best will be your responses.
Responsible AI
It is not lost on Google how availing all this power en masse may be misused. For example where AI could develop bias with say a camera at the airport profiling passengers who don’t consist the majority. In developing AI aided tools Google ask, will it be socially beneficial? Or could it lead to harm in any way? And since AI can generate content leading to misinformation, google has said it will have all images originated by its AI with metadata, this way one will be able to trace back the image’s origin.
