Kenya scoops eighth Tong-IL Moo-Do crown

Kenya’s national team, Jasiri, is the winner of the 2020 Mombasa Open Tong IL- Moo-Do international martial arts championship.

The team bagged 104 medals during the event held at Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa, to claim its eighth straight victory.

Kenya reigned in almost all the categories, collecting 32 gold medals,31 silver and 41 bronze,  way ahead of their perennial rivals, Philippines,who came second with 27 medals after garnering 13 gold, 11 silver and three bronze medals.

In 2019, Kenya won the overall trophy with 31 gold medals, 36 Silver and 46 bronze medals beating Thailand who came second, but in the 2020 event, the visitors could not withstand the host pressure.

Iran emerged third with five medals, while the Democratic Republic of Congo DRC were fourth.

Cote D’Ivoire came fifth with 3 medals, while the sixth position went to Japan with two medals.

Thailand, Turkeyand Congo Brazzaville finished with a bronze medal each.

Kenya bagged gold in the 25 years bracket male category when June Su scored 7.6 points beating Philippines Mey Mar who managed to score 7.3 points. 

In the men’s 24 years bracket, Japan’s Michihiro A. got 8.9 points to beat Philippines’ Johny G. with 8.2 points.

Salma Ali of Team Kenya garnered 6.9 points in the black belt female category to emerge second behind Philippines Princes Min who garnered 7.2 points.

The event was graced by the World Tong-IL Moo-Do Federation president Takamistu Hoshiko who lauded Kenyan government for allowing the event to take place.

Kenyas delegation was led by Former Sports Commissioner Gordon Oluoch and African Tong-IL Moo-Do Federation president Clarence Mwakio.

The officials lauded the government for continued support to the growing sport in the country.
