President Uhuru Kenyatta is on Sunday evening set to address the residents of Central Kenya in a candid interview with vernacular radio and TV stations from the region.

State House Kenya confirmed that the interview will air live from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

"His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta will this evening be hosted on radio and television stations that broadcast in Central Kenya dialects for a live interview at State House, Nairobi," State House Kenya confirmed Sunday.

The Head of State is expected to weigh in on the succession politics ahead of the general election slated for Tuesday, August 9.

As he heads for retirement, the President has endorsed Azimio One Kenya coalition's Raila Odinga for the presidency, despite protests from his estranged deputy William Ruto, who is eyeing the same seat.

Several politicians allied to Ruto's Kenya Kwanza alliance have termed the interview as illegal, on grounds that the campaign period lapsed on Saturday, August 6.

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party politicians argue that the interview is a part of deliberate efforts to continue with campaigns for Raila.

"If he campaigns for Baba today, electoral law will have been violated. Campaigns stopped yesterday," Murang'a Senator Irungu Kang'ata said in a tweet.

Kikuyu MP Kimani Inchungwa said: "Any manner of campaign even by the Azimio chairman is illegal. That is the law. Period."
