Nairobi Governor-Elect Johnson Sakaja faces an uphill task in his bid to govern the city after the Azimio coalition clinched a slim majority in the county assembly.

Sakaja won the city’s governorship after garnering 699,392 votes, beating Polycarp Igathe with 573,518 votes.

Azimio coalition managed to win 44 MCA slots against Kenya Kwanza’s 37.

The MCAs allied to the Azimio coalition include 35 from Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), five from the Jubilee party and four from the Wiper party.

President-elect William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) secured 34 slots in the county assembly while former Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria’s Chama cha Kazi clinched one slot. Two other MCAs clinched the seat while running as independents.

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) initially rescheduled the election for the Utawala and Kwa Njenga wards to August 23 but on Wednesday night postponed the polls indefinitely.

In Utawala ward, the postponement was due to the death of one of the candidates.

It means Sakaja will need to find a way of working smoothly with Azimio-allied MCAs in order to pass important business such as county budget, supplementary budget, county policies and motions.
