Kuria sets new Dongo Kundu SEZ finish date

Trade and Industry Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has announced that Dongo Kundu special economic zone will be fully operational and fully open for investors by July 1, 2023, cutting its completion time by three years.

The project which was initially slated to be completed in 2026 includes the creation of a free trade zone, a free port, a logistics hub, and a mega industrial zone where major players and regional countries using Mombasa port will be allocated parcels of land to set up their key depots.

Speaking after holding a joint meeting with various stakeholders including government agencies at the Kenya Ports Authority headquarters, Kuria said the government will soon subdivide 384 acres of the Dongo Kundu special economic zone land to pave way for investments.

“We are going to subdivide 384 acres into parcels and titles for the resettlement of 1,654 PAPs, compensation award and compensation of payment of 1,582 people who have developed in the land, so we expect the exercise to be completed fully by March 31, 2023, and president William Ruto to come before that date to come and give out title deeds for those affected,” said Kuria.

He confirmed that the National Treasury has released money for resettling people who will be relocated to pave the way for the project development. He said the land will be amalgamated into parcels to favour various sectors.

“We are going to avail land for resettlement and compensation of those who will be affected by the project, the money is already released, it is with the National land commission NLC and they have confirmed that they are ready to compensate them,” said Kuria.
