Prices of basic commodities are unlikely to come down this year due to Russia’s war against Ukraine, business leaders have said.

They noted that global challenges that have translated to higher commodity prices locally are set to continue due to the invasion of Ukraine.

Speaking on the sidelines of the release of a report dubbed Mobilising the Private Sector for Peace, Mkenya Daima Secretariat chairman Vimal Shah said tahe Covid-19 era has witnessed lockdowns, there was disruption everywhere, and everybody has suffered.  “Right now we’re actually having a huge issue on the Ukraine– Russia conflict and that’s affecting global energy, global prices on food and all that stuff. And I think that’s something more important to focus on and see how do we become competitive,” said Vimal.

He called on the government to increase agricultural production to cushion Kenyans from further increase in food prices.

“Because food prices are not going to come down in this year. So I think this is something that’s an opportunity and we shouldn’t destroy it. Covid time has taught us that we could do things differently,”

The report by International Alert sought to measure the role of private sector actors in peace and conflict dynamics in Kenya and Somalia
